Paragraph : 21st February was a red letter day in history. It is observed as Martyrs Day or Mother Language Day. Throughout 1952 the students and general public of the then East Pakistan protested against the Pakistani leaders' steadfast declaration that Urdu would be the sole state language of Pakistan. Bangla wrote and protested against this unjust imposition and denial of the dignity of the mother tongue.They demanded to give Bengali the status of a dignified language. On February 21, 1952, their protest ended when the police opened fire on a procession of students on the Dhaka University campus. Some brave souls - Rafiq, Jabbar, Salam, Barkat were killed.
